Mediacorp Clinches 34 Awards at the 2022 World Media Festivals

Most awards were for news, current affairs, and documentary programs.

SINGAPORE: CNA’s news, current affairs, and documentary programs have secured a remarkable 23 awards at the prestigious World Media Festivals Television & Corporate Media Awards 2022 held in Hamburg, Germany. The accolades included 13 gold awards, nine silver, and one special award, contributing significantly to Mediacorp’s total of 34 awards.

This annual international event attracted entries from over 250 media companies worldwide, including renowned names like NHK, National Geographic, Deutsche Welle, and iQiyi, celebrating outstanding television and corporate media solutions across various genres, especially in information, education, and entertainment.

CNA’s current affairs program, Regardless of Race: 5 Years On, earned both a gold award for Best Documentary in the Society and Social Issues category and the “Hand in Hand” Special Award. This award recognizes content that showcases positive actions by individuals or organizations that improve lives or society. The two-part series revisits issues of race in Singapore, following numerous reports of racist incidents since the pandemic. Hosted by Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary, it employs social experiments to reveal underlying racial biases.

Mediacorp announced these wins in a press release on Thursday (Jun 23).

In the entertainment realm, the Chinese drama My Mini-Me and Me, produced in collaboration with Infocus Asia, won gold in the Entertainment: Mini Series category and also the “Magic Waves” Special Award for its exceptional original music that enhances storytelling.

CNA also won gold for investigative reporting and sustainability documentaries. Among the highlights was the fourth episode of the successful series Inside Maximum Security, which received recognition as the Best Documentary in the Human Relations and Values category. This docuseries offers a candid exploration of the lives of five inmates at Singapore’s Changi Prison and has amassed nearly 10 million views on YouTube, also available on Netflix and Discovery Asia.

Two CNA Correspondent specials, Inside Taiwan’s Phone Scam Rings and Saving Endangered Animals in Malaysia, also garnered gold awards in the news reports and features category.

In Inside Taiwan’s Phone Scam Rings, CNA Taiwan correspondent Victoria Jen interviews both scammers and victims, exploring the persistence of scams despite extensive police efforts. Meanwhile, CNA Malaysia correspondent Afifah Ariffin’s award-winning special highlights the conservation efforts for endangered species, including the Malayan tiger and Bornean orangutan.

Additionally, an episode from CNA’s signature Undercover Asia documentary series focusing on China’s pet economy also earned gold, shedding light on animal rights activists who expose a disturbing community of animal abusers.

Other gold award winners for CNA included sustainability-focused documentaries such as A Wicked Problem and The Electric Race, as well as Singapore in Red, Green and Blue, showcasing the nation’s culture and environment.
