Loh Kean Yew Makes History as Singapore’s First Badminton Player to Reach World No. 3

A remarkable rise in the rankings highlights Loh’s dedication and skill on the international stage.

Loh Kean Yew, the Singaporean badminton star, has achieved a remarkable milestone by breaking into the top three of the world rankings for the first time in his career.

In the latest update from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday (Nov 7), Loh soared to a career-high position of third, climbing from fifth just a week prior. Danish player Viktor Axelsen retains the top spot, followed by Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in second place.

This achievement marks a historic moment for Singapore, as Loh becomes the first male badminton player from the country to reach the world’s top three. Previously, Ronald Susilo held the highest rank for Singaporean men’s singles players, reaching sixth place in 2004. The notable Zarinah Abdullah also reached third in 1994, making her Singapore’s first professional female badminton player.

In the women’s rankings, Loh’s compatriot Yeo Jia Min currently stands at 20th place.

Loh recently competed at the Hylo Open in Germany, where he made it to the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting. He remains focused on securing a spot in the year-end World Tour Finals and is set to compete next at the Australian Open next week
