“Here Are Some Suggestions” — Netizen Responds to Deputy PM Lawrence Wong on Expense-Cutting Ideas

A social media user lists specific ways to reduce national spending in response to Deputy PM’s alleged remarks.

SINGAPORE: After Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong allegedly mentioned a lack of public suggestions for reducing expenses, a Singaporean netizen took to social media to offer a few of their own. Posting on Facebook on Thursday (March 30), the user listed five ways the government might consider lowering costs.

Their first proposal was a substantial salary cut for ministers, suggesting a reduction of 30 to 50 percent. Second, they proposed halving the Prime Minister’s pay, followed by a 60 percent cut for the President. The fourth recommendation was to eliminate the position of mayor, questioning the role’s necessity alongside other officials overseeing local precincts. The final suggestion urged a reduction in what they called “unnecessary spending” by the People’s Association.

Another Facebook user shared a similar message earlier in the week with an extended list of 23 cost-saving recommendations. These included limiting annual transport fare hikes, particularly given SMRT’s reported profits, and encouraging clearer, more concise communication in Parliament. Both posts received considerable engagement, indicating public interest in discussions on national spending.
