Creating Pathways to a Stronger Society

How Skillseed is shaping communities with empathy, resilience, and inclusive engagement

SINGAPORE: For many HR professionals, the concept of a “safe space” has grown in significance. In workplaces, it offers an environment where employees feel supported, valued, and safe to share their concerns. But beyond corporate life, the term “safe space” originates in communities that focus on empathy, safety, and connection—qualities that Huijia Phua, founder of Skillseed, has embedded into her social enterprise.

Skillseed, which Huijia started, is a social enterprise aimed at building communities grounded in collaboration and mutual trust. Their initiatives, like Resilience Trails, take participants through neighborhoods guided by local residents who highlight both the daily challenges and strengths within their communities. These guides, often from under-resourced backgrounds, are not only compensated fairly but are also supported with flexible work that can be done from home.

Skillseed, which celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, has grown into a team focused on practical solutions to social challenges. In addition to Resilience Trails, Skillseed also provides immersive courses and training to corporations and schools, covering topics like urban sustainability and community engagement. The aim is to create lasting change by helping participants develop a deeper empathy and understanding of diverse communities.

Huijia’s approach to sustainability extends beyond the environment. Her business model fosters a culture where her team, community guides, and collaborators feel empowered to share and grow Skillseed’s values. At Skillseed, employees and community members are encouraged to speak openly in “brave spaces,” where meaningful discussions and divergent views are welcomed.

As Huijia looks to the future, her goal is clear: To continue fostering a workplace and community rooted in empathy, shared ownership, and a commitment to social impact.
