“A three-way contest emerges as Ng Kok Song, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Tan Kin Lian vie for the presidency.”
SINGAPORE: The stage is set for Singapore’s Presidential Election, with Ng Kok Song, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Tan Kin Lian officially confirmed as candidates after filing their nomination papers at the People’s Association headquarters on Tuesday morning (Aug 22).
Singaporeans will cast their votes on Sep 1, declared a public holiday, to elect the country’s ninth President. Campaigning officially begins now and will conclude with Cooling-off Day on Aug 31.
Highlights from Nomination Day:
Ng Kok Song: The former GIC chief investment officer pledged to be a “trusted friend” at the Istana. In response to criticism labeling him a “weak candidate,” Ng stated, “It is up to the people of Singapore. I have come forward to serve and ask you to give me the chance.” Later, Ng visited his childhood neighborhood in Hougang’s Kangkar area, underscoring his local roots.
Tan Kin Lian: Addressing controversy over past social media posts, Tan questioned women’s rights group AWARE for labeling his remarks as objectifying women. “Please tell me what exactly you find offensive,” he said, adding he would provide further clarification in due time.
Tharman Shanmugaratnam: The former Senior Minister refuted accusations made earlier by Tan, who alleged involvement in a “smear campaign.” Tan subsequently amended his statements to remove references to Tharman. “It goes against everything I represent,” Tharman told reporters, affirming his clean campaign approach.
