School Bus Fares to Increase by Up to 13% in 2024

Rising operational costs prompt the Ministry of Education to adjust the pricing cap for school bus services, aiming to ensure continued service for students.

Starting January 2024, school bus operators in Singapore will be allowed to raise the pricing cap on bus fares by up to 13%, according to the Ministry of Education (MOE). This follows a 7% fare increase earlier this year.

MOE explained that the adjustment addresses ongoing cost pressures faced by bus operators and provides them the flexibility to sustain their services. The ministry emphasized that this measure aims to avoid disruptions that could inconvenience families.

Parents will be informed of fare changes beginning in September 2023. Meanwhile, students under the Financial Assistance Scheme will receive a subsidy covering 65% of their monthly bus fares, up from 60% earlier this year. MOE encouraged families needing further financial help to approach their schools.

The ministry will continue monitoring the situation and collaborate with schools and bus operators to maintain sustainable and reliable services. It has also introduced initiatives, such as allowing certain operators to hire more foreign drivers and offering greater operational flexibility, to address manpower shortages and service challenges.
