President Tharman pledges to champion multiracialism and inclusivity
SINGAPORE: Tharman Shanmugaratnam officially assumed office as Singapore’s ninth President on Thursday (Sep 14) during a swearing-in ceremony held at the Istana. This comes two weeks after his decisive victory in the September 1 Presidential Election.
The ceremony, attended by dignitaries including former Presidents Halimah Yacob and Tony Tan, as well as members of the Cabinet, took place in the State Room of the Istana.
Mr. Tharman, a former Senior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, secured 70.41% of the votes, including those cast overseas. His opponents, former GIC chief investment officer Ng Kok Song and ex-NTUC Income CEO Tan Kin Lian, garnered 15.72% and 13.87%, respectively.
A Leader for All Singaporeans
As President, Mr. Tharman will serve as the custodian of the nation’s reserves and ensure the integrity of its public service. His role also includes uniting Singapore’s diverse and multiracial population.
In his inaugural speech, President Tharman vowed to exercise “scrupulous and independent” judgment in safeguarding Singapore’s reserves. He also pledged to collaborate with the government, community groups, and citizens to promote multiracialism and foster a more inclusive society.
“I will do my utmost to support initiatives that deepen the respect we accord to our fellow citizens, of all backgrounds and in every walk of life—the respect for all that is at the heart of our solidarity as Singaporeans,” said President Tharman.
A Farewell to Mdm Halimah
The inauguration followed a farewell ceremony for Madam Halimah Yacob, whose six-year tenure as Singapore’s first female President concluded on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, emphasized the significance of Mr. Tharman’s election. He described him as “eminently qualified for this high office” and noted that the election results indicate that race plays a smaller role in voters’ considerations today.
The Prime Minister commended President Tharman’s “ability, experience, and stature,” alongside his sound judgment and unwavering integrity—qualities essential for the role of President.
