Singapore to Expand Police Surveillance with 200,000 Cameras by Mid-2030s to Enhance Safety

Police Cameras Have Played a Key Role in Solving Over 7,500 Crimes Since 2012

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has issued a tender to significantly expand its network of police cameras, aiming to double the current number to over 200,000 by the mid-2030s. This expansion is part of a broader initiative to improve coverage in newly developed housing estates and infrastructure built since the installation of the first police cameras in 2012.

As part of the tender, over 90,000 existing cameras will be progressively replaced with newer models at public housing blocks, multi-storey car parks, and other key areas such as neighbourhood and town centres. The goal is to enhance public safety, support police investigations, and increase coverage in commercial, entertainment, and recreational areas with high foot traffic.

Currently, police cameras are not present at all bus stops—only those linked to Housing and Development Board (HDB) blocks. The new plans under this tender will ensure that all bus stops in Singapore are equipped with cameras. Additionally, cameras will be installed at bus interchanges, MRT stations, and residential common areas, such as ground-floor lift landings.

In response to privacy concerns, an SPF spokesperson clarified that cameras are installed only in public spaces, ensuring that privacy is maintained. The footage recorded is securely stored and will be deleted after 31 days unless it is required for investigations. Only authorized personnel have access to the footage, and regular audits are conducted to prevent unauthorized access.

Since the introduction of police cameras, they have been instrumental in solving approximately 7,500 crimes, including housebreaking, motor vehicle thefts, and unlicensed moneylending-related harassment. Video analytics have further enhanced the effectiveness of these cameras, enabling police to identify and apprehend suspects within hours.

Some of the key features of the police cameras include high-definition video recording, 360-degree pan-tilt zones, and the ability to capture footage in various lighting conditions. The technology continues to evolve, aiding the police in quickly reviewing footage for valuable leads.

A 2021 survey found that 91% of respondents supported the deployment of police cameras, citing them as crucial for crime deterrence and enhancing public safety.

Notable Cases Solved Using Police Cameras
The cameras have played a pivotal role in solving high-profile cases. One notable example was a woman who splashed boiling water on her husband before fleeing to Batam, Indonesia. Through footage from housing blocks and MRT stations, police were able to track her escape route and identify her in a nearby CCTV video, leading to her arrest.

In another case, police used camera footage to investigate loanshark harassment, identifying the suspect after reviewing footage from multiple HDB blocks. The suspect was arrested within a week, significantly reducing investigation time.

Police cameras are becoming an integral part of crime-fighting efforts in Singapore, and their expansion is expected to further enhance the country’s public safety infrastructure.
