Singapore Faces Rising COVID-19 Cases with Confidence, Ong Ye Kung Emphasizes Vaccination

Health Minister highlights the importance of annual vaccinations to mitigate future waves

SINGAPORE: Despite a recent rise in COVID-19 cases, Singapore is well-prepared to handle the situation, said Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung on Wednesday (Dec 13). Speaking during the launch of a new framework to protect healthcare workers from abuse, Mr. Ong reassured the public of the nation’s resilience while urging citizens to stay vigilant through vaccinations.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported a sharp increase in weekly infections, from 22,094 cases in the week of Nov 19-25 to 32,035 cases in the following week. However, daily hospitalizations currently stand at 560, with fewer than 10 ICU cases.

Vaccination Remains Key
Mr. Ong emphasized the critical role of annual vaccinations, particularly for seniors above 60 and those with chronic illnesses. He noted that 60% of Singapore’s population had received vaccinations in the past 12 months but cautioned against complacency.

“If vaccination rates drop and another wave emerges, the impact will be greater, especially for seniors,” he warned.

While COVID-19 remains a concern, Mr. Ong highlighted the growing presence of other viruses, such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), urging continued vigilance in maintaining personal hygiene and avoiding unnecessary exposure when unwell.

Prepared but Cautious
Singapore’s healthcare system, bolstered by lessons from over three years of pandemic management, is equipped to handle the current wave without reinstating stringent measures. “Going back to DORSCON Green will be the last thing on our minds,” Mr. Ong assured.

While it’s unclear if the current wave has peaked, with daily cases hovering around 5,000, the Health Minister emphasized that these numbers are within manageable levels. He encouraged Singaporeans to continue masking when needed and practicing responsible behavior to protect the vulnerable.

With proactive measures and a focus on vaccinations, Singapore aims to navigate this wave smoothly while preparing for potential future challenges.
