The leaders advance cross-border connectivity and economic collaboration through two transformative projects.
SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim underscored their commitment to two landmark projects on Thursday (Jan 11), solidifying ties between the neighboring nations.
The leaders met to discuss the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ), both of which are poised to enhance economic cooperation and cross-border connectivity.
RTS Link: A Major Connectivity Upgrade
The RTS Link, a 4km railway shuttle connecting Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and Woodlands North in Singapore, remains a central focus. Managed jointly by Malaysia’s Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd and Singapore’s SMRT Corp Ltd, the project aims to alleviate the chronic congestion at the Johor Causeway, one of the busiest border crossings globally.
Upon completion, the RTS Link will serve as the third land connection between the two countries, streamlining commutes for thousands of daily travelers.
Advancing the Johor-Singapore SEZ
Following discussions on the RTS Link, the leaders witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Johor-Singapore SEZ. This economic initiative, first proposed by Malaysia’s Economy Minister Mohd Rafizi Ramli in May 2023, aims to enhance trade and business opportunities in the region.
The SEZ, inspired by successful models like Shenzhen, China, is expected to attract foreign investments and drive economic growth. In 2022, Johor recorded RM70.6 billion in foreign investments, with Singapore contributing significantly to the manufacturing sector.
A Vision for Regional Growth
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi expressed optimism about the SEZ, likening its potential to Shenzhen’s transformation into a global high-tech hub.
With Singapore and Malaysia’s strong bilateral relationship and shared economic goals, the Johor-Singapore SEZ is positioned to become a pivotal hub in Asia’s economic landscape, fostering innovation, trade, and sustainable growth across borders.
