From respiratory therapy to film preservation, these students are forging unique paths abroad to fulfill their aspirations.
Tammy Low has embarked on a journey far from Singapore to chase a passion that few of her peers even know exists. At just 21, the recent graduate of Temasek Polytechnic is now pursuing a degree in respiratory therapy at Ohio State University in the United States.
This unconventional career path wasn’t part of Tammy’s original plan. Her story, however, highlights how shifting aspirations and unique interests can lead to unexpected opportunities.
A Shift in Direction
Tammy initially dreamed of becoming a teacher and later gravitated toward pharmaceutical sciences during her secondary school years. Fascinated by how medicine impacts the body, she pursued a diploma in pharmaceutical science. Yet, during her studies, Tammy discovered a deeper calling—one that required her to interact directly with patients throughout their recovery journeys.
This revelation led her to job-shadow a respiratory therapist at a public hospital. The experience solidified her passion for the field. Observing procedures such as intubation and patient assessments, she found fulfillment in the collaborative efforts of healthcare teams.
However, there was a challenge: respiratory therapy isn’t offered as a degree program in Singapore. Tammy’s determination led her to Ohio State University, supported by a scholarship from MOHH.
An Uncommon Academic Pursuit
Tammy’s journey mirrors that of Matthew Yang, a 31-year-old Singaporean studying Moving Image Archiving and Preservation at New York University. Matthew’s passion lies in preserving cultural history through film, a field critical to safeguarding cinematic works vulnerable to decay.
Before enrolling at NYU, Matthew worked at the Asian Film Archive, where he realized the need for specialized knowledge to fill gaps in his understanding. With a scholarship enabling his studies, he now works toward advancing film preservation efforts both in Singapore and the wider region.
New Challenges, New Opportunities
Both Tammy and Matthew have embraced the challenges of studying abroad. Tammy is adjusting to life in the U.S., where even simple interactions—like responding to the customary “How are you?”—feel unfamiliar. Meanwhile, Matthew has found a supportive community in his highly specialized program, enjoying the cultural diversity and culinary delights of New York City.
For Tammy, the opportunity to make a tangible impact on patients’ lives keeps her motivated. One poignant memory during her job-shadowing experience stands out: assisting a patient through the painful yet crucial process of extubation. The teamwork of healthcare professionals in easing the patient’s discomfort left a lasting impression on her.
