YouGov survey reveals Singaporeans’ hopes, confidence, and expectations for the incoming Prime Minister.
SINGAPORE: With Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong set to be sworn in as Singapore’s next Prime Minister on May 15, a recent YouGov survey shows that 45% of Singaporeans feel positive emotions about the transition. The poll, conducted between April 18 and 20, surveyed over 1,000 adults and revealed that 20% of respondents feel “hopeful,” 13% are “confident,” and 12% feel “happy” about the news.
Varied Reactions Across Generations
While enthusiasm is notable, 36% of respondents said they had no reaction to the announcement, with Millennials being the least engaged demographic (40% expressing no reaction). Baby Boomers displayed the highest level of confidence in Mr. Wong, with 18% sharing this sentiment.
When it comes to expectations, the survey found consistency across generations. Baby Boomers and Gen Z respondents had the highest proportion (43% and 41%, respectively) expressing “a lot of expectation” for Mr. Wong’s leadership. In total, 76% of respondents have “a lot” or “some” expectations from the incoming Prime Minister.
Competence and Trustworthiness
More than half of those surveyed (53%) consider Mr. Wong to be competent, with Gen Z leading the way at 63%. Trustworthiness was highlighted by 40% of respondents, and 37% described him as likable. Additional traits attributed to Mr. Wong include honesty (28%), strong leadership (28%), and charisma (21%).
“Younger Singaporeans appear especially optimistic, attributing a range of positive traits to Wong, from competence to charisma,” the report noted.
Looking Ahead
PM Lee Hsien Loong, who delayed his intended leadership handover due to the COVID-19 pandemic, announced that Mr. Wong would take over leadership before the next General Election, which must be held by November 2025.
As the nation anticipates this leadership transition, the survey reflects both optimism and significant expectations for Singapore’s new Prime Minister.
