With a commitment to unity, innovation, and resilience, Wong promises to sustain the Singaporean miracle.
SINGAPORE: Lawrence Wong has officially taken office as Singapore’s fourth Prime Minister, marking a new chapter in the nation’s leadership. Sworn in on May 15, Wong vowed to uphold the principles that built the country while forging a leadership style unique to his generation.
In his inaugural address, Wong emphasized the values ingrained in Singapore’s identity—meritocracy, multiracialism, incorruptibility, and justice—and pledged to continue defying the odds to sustain what he described as the “Singapore miracle.”
“Our leadership style will differ from previous generations,” Wong said. “We will lead in our own way, think boldly, and ensure the best chapters of our Singapore Story are yet to come.”
The swearing-in ceremony at the Istana was attended by over 800 guests, representing a cross-section of Singapore’s diverse society. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam presided over the event, which also saw Wong’s deputies, Gan Kim Yong and Heng Swee Keat, take their oaths alongside other Cabinet members.
Unity Through Diversity
Wong stressed the importance of pragmatism and compromise in addressing societal challenges, emphasizing unity amidst diversity. “We have always embraced our differences rather than denying them,” he said, adding that Singapore’s success hinges on mutual respect and trust among its people.
Reflecting on the collective effort during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wong highlighted how shared trust and cooperation saw the nation through the crisis.
Standing on Strong Foundations
Wong acknowledged the achievements of past leaders, crediting Singapore’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his successors for establishing and nurturing the nation’s foundations.
“We stand on the shoulders of giants,” Wong said, expressing gratitude to his predecessor Lee Hsien Loong for his two decades of leadership, which steered the nation through significant challenges and transformations.
Vision for the Future
Promising to help Singaporeans realize their aspirations, Wong outlined plans to build a vibrant economy, create meaningful jobs, and foster a fair and inclusive society.
“We will ensure that every Singaporean, regardless of their start in life, can uplift themselves and lead fulfilling lives,” he said, calling for collective action to shape a brighter future.
Wong also acknowledged global challenges, including geopolitical tensions and climate change, emphasizing Singapore’s need to adapt and remain resilient.
A Call to Action
Wong concluded with a rallying call for unity and shared resolve: “Let us take Singapore forward, together.”
Accompanied by a performance of The Road Ahead, the swearing-in ceremony underscored the significance of the occasion. A video chronicling Wong’s journey, from his humble beginnings to the nation’s highest office, reminded attendees of the values and determination that have defined Singapore’s success.
As Wong takes the helm, he carries with him a promise to continue defying expectations and ensuring Singapore remains a beacon of hope and progress for generations to come.
