Ling Weihong Highlights Cost of Living as Primary Concern for Residents

Residents express worries over inflation’s impact on daily expenses in Singapore.

In a recent social media update, Ling Weihong, Chairman of the People’s Action Party (PAP) Sengkang East Branch, emphasized that the rising cost of living remains the foremost concern for residents in Singapore.

On Tuesday (Nov 15), Mr. Ling took to Facebook to share insights from his recent visits to homes in Sengkang East. He noted, “During our house visits yesterday evening, the cost of living was the top concern for residents. Inflation has significantly affected everyone’s finances.”

He added that many residents are eagerly anticipating the support and cash payouts from the government in the coming months. However, he also acknowledged that some citizens are calling for more action. “They appreciate the practical realities of financing such support and understand that money cannot materialize out of thin air,” he remarked.

Mr. Ling assured residents, “We will continue to reflect on their feedback and concerns while exploring ways to assist.”

The discussion around rising prices, from food to housing, has dominated conversations in Singapore recently. With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike scheduled for January 2023, increasing from seven percent to eight percent, many residents are feeling the pinch.

In the backdrop of these economic concerns, it’s worth noting that the opposition Workers’ Party (WP) secured victory in Sengkang GRC during the 2020 General Elections, narrowly defeating the PAP with 52.13 percent of the votes compared to PAP’s 47.87 percent. The WP team included He Ting Ru, Jamus Lim, Raeesah Khan, and Louis Chua Kheng Wee, who faced off against the PAP’s Ng Chee Meng, Lam Pin Min, Amrin Amin, and Raymond Lye.
