The devastating floods also caused severe damage to homes and infrastructure in the region.
JAKARTA: A deadly flood in Indonesia’s North Maluku province claimed the lives of 13 people and left two others injured on Sunday (Aug 25). The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall since Saturday, wreaked havoc in the eastern part of the country, particularly affecting Ternate city.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the floodwaters severely damaged at least 10 homes in the city. With forecasts indicating that the heavy rain may persist in the coming days, authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety instructions.
“We call on the public to stay vigilant and heed official warnings about possible subsequent flooding,” stated BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari.
In response to the disaster, a team has been deployed to assist with evacuation efforts, and search and rescue operations are being carried out by Basarnas, the country’s search and rescue agency. The floods, accompanied by landslides, have left debris scattered across the affected areas, complicating rescue operations.
This comes after another tragic incident in May, where flash floods and mudslides in West Sumatra claimed the lives of over 60 people.
