The Famous Malaysian Kopitiam Brings Its Signature Dishes and Record-Breaking Egg Tarts to Bugis Junction
Fans of Nanyang-style coffeehouses in Singapore will be thrilled to know that Oriental Kopi, a beloved Malaysian chain, has opened its first outlet in the city. Located at Bugis Junction, the café marks the brand’s expansion into Singapore, following the success of its outlets in Johor Bahru, where long queues are a common sight. The café, which opened on Wednesday (Nov 27), is a collaboration with the Paradise Group and occupies the space formerly occupied by Kogane Yama, a Japanese tendon restaurant.
The coffeehouse is a spacious 100-seat venue, designed in the traditional Nanyang style, complete with vintage rattan chairs and shophouse windows adorned with roller blinds. For many who have visited Oriental Kopi in Malaysia, this familiar setup is a welcome sight. The café is also known for its impressive achievement in the Malaysia Book of Records, where it holds the title for selling the most egg tarts in the country. These iconic pastries are one of the standout offerings at the café, and customers can expect to find them on the menu, though the recipe is still being refined to perfect the texture of the egg custard.
In terms of food, Singaporean patrons can look forward to a menu almost identical to what Oriental Kopi serves in Malaysia. Popular dishes include the Oriental Signature Nasi Lemak (S$9.50), Nanyang Curry Chicken Mee Siam (S$10.50), and the Double Butter Kaya Toast (S$2.60). There are also savoury snacks like curry cheong fun (S$6.80) and curried soft-boiled egg toast (S$4.60), which complement the café’s extensive range of beverages.
Of course, coffee lovers will appreciate the signature Oriental Kopi (S$2), a classic brew made from a blend of Arabica, Liberica, and Robusta beans, as well as the iced Oriental Mocha (S$4.80), which is perfect for those seeking a photo-worthy drink. The café also offers an array of food souvenirs, such as Traditional Kaya (S$3.50), Roasted White Coffee Sachets (S$7.50), and Cheese Pineapple Tarts (S$15.50).
Oriental Kopi’s Bugis Junction outlet is the first of eight planned branches in Singapore, which are expected to open over the next three years. As part of its expansion strategy, the Paradise Group is also working on introducing Singapore-exclusive dishes at future locations.
