Authorities Continue Investigation as Suspects Remain at Large
MANILA: Philippine authorities announced on Friday, 6 December, that an American man, kidnapped in the southern region of the country, is presumed dead. Police are still working to apprehend those responsible for his abduction.
Elliot Eastman, an American citizen, was taken from his home on 17 October by four unidentified men in Mindanao, a region previously known for ransom kidnappings that have diminished over recent years.
Eastman reportedly attempted to escape but was shot by the abductors, who dragged him onto a boat that sped away from the Sibuco municipality coastline.
Investigation Updates
Lieutenant Colonel Ramoncelio Sawan, acting regional police spokesperson, revealed that a suspect was arrested in November, and a witness had been questioned. According to both accounts, Eastman died from gunshot wounds during the boat ride.
“A suspect informed the witness—a relative of theirs—that Eastman succumbed to his injuries the night of the abduction. His body was reportedly thrown into the sea,” said Sawan in a statement to AFP.
Police have not received any ransom demands since the incident, which further supports the presumption of Eastman’s death.
Authorities believe about 10 individuals were involved in the kidnapping. However, they appear to have no ties to known rebel groups in Mindanao that previously engaged in similar crimes. The motive for the abduction remains unclear.
The arrested suspect has provided a sworn statement regarding Eastman’s death, which has been submitted to the prosecutor’s office handling the kidnapping case.
Ongoing Efforts
Coastal police stations in the region have been instructed to search for Eastman’s remains.
“We hold onto hope that he may still be alive,” Sawan added. “But for now, we must rely on the evidence at hand.”
The US Embassy in Manila confirmed they are aware of the reports and are working closely with Philippine authorities to address the case.
