From breaking records to dreaming of corporate-sponsored sports schools, Soh Rui Yong discusses his journey, ambitions, and life beyond athletics.
SINGAPORE: Soh Rui Yong, one of Singapore’s most decorated distance runners, continues to make strides both on and off the track. Most recently, he won silver in the 10,000-metre race at the SEA Games 2023, breaking the national record. Beyond athletics, Soh is navigating his second year of law school at University College London, with graduation expected in 2024.
In an exclusive interview, Soh reflected on his personal brand, the challenges of being a national athlete, and his vision for the future of sports in Singapore.
The Importance of Building a Personal Brand
While Soh believes that excelling in sports depends on talent and opportunity, he acknowledges that building a personal brand opens doors to sponsorships, media appearances, and public engagements. “Having a brand to stand for something attracts a fan base,” he said, adding that he uses his profile to inspire others, whether through public speaking or offering training advice.
Life Off the Track
In his downtime, Soh enjoys relaxing with his girlfriend, watching Modern Family, and taking vacations. He admits that balancing a serious athletic career with personal life can be challenging, but he appreciates his partner’s understanding.
Thoughts on Sports Policy in Singapore
Soh praised the Workers’ Party for raising issues about Singapore’s sports ecosystem in Parliament, highlighting the importance of bipartisan collaboration to improve the nation’s sporting scene. “Sports is the most powerful way to unite a country,” he said, expressing hope for more support and investment in athletes’ careers.
Dreams and Future Goals
Looking ahead, Soh aims to maintain his momentum in athletics while preparing for life after competitive sports. His ultimate dream is to establish corporate-sponsored sports schools in underserved communities, particularly in countries like Indonesia, to provide children with opportunities to learn and grow through sports. “Children are the future of our world, and they can gain so much from the values inculcated through sports,” he emphasized.
Quirky Fun Facts
Soh watched Aladdin five times a day as a child.
He set a distance-running record wearing Under Armour HOVR spikes in 2021.
He and his sister bonded over every episode of The Office, continuing to share memes about the show to this day.
Pride in Representing Singapore
When asked what he enjoys sharing about Singapore with international athletes, Soh humorously referenced his camaraderie during the SEA Games 2023. “Water,” he joked, recalling the moment he shared his drink with an Indonesian competitor during the 10,000-metre final.
