Charity Seeks Donations to Provide Bicycles for Migrant Workers Earning $18 a Day

Not-for-Profit Organization Aims to Ease Commute Challenges for Migrant Workers

A not-for-profit organization is appealing to the public for donations to provide bicycles for migrant workers, helping them navigate the long distances to their dormitories and workplaces more easily.
ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), a group dedicated to championing the needs of Singapore’s migrant workers, announced on June 3 that many workers face challenges walking long distances around their dormitories and work sites, as well as to the nearest public transport stations.

“Bicycles are incredibly useful for them, but they simply cannot afford new ones on salaries of just S$18 a day,” the organization stated.
IRR clarified that it has been collecting preloved and new bicycles from donors to distribute to the workers in need.
The group invited the public to donate bicycles, specifying that they should be suitable for adult men, in good working condition, and equipped with locks. Additionally, they welcomed donations of helmets if available.

Members of the online community quickly responded to the appeal, offering their bicycles or suggesting potential sources for used bikes.
“Hi, may I suggest approaching town councils, as they often have issues with abandoned bikes? I’ve seen many still in good condition, particularly in the Yishun estate,” wrote Facebook user Aldrin Izzah Arifin.
Another user, Ng Sock Hoon, commented, “I’ve noticed a lot of bikes left abandoned in condominium car parks, and they appear to be in decent shape.”

Additionally, one Facebook page suggested reaching out to shared bike service companies that have ceased operations, proposing that their abandoned bikes could be put to good use.
IRR mentioned that it has a long waiting list of workers needing bicycles and encouraged interested donors to reach out to the group via private message.
