Beijing issues diplomatic reprimands over messages supporting Taiwan’s electoral process.
China has criticized multiple nations, including Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the Philippines, for extending congratulations to Taiwan’s new president-elect, Lai Ching-te. The rebuke marks a continuation of Beijing’s firm stance on its One China policy.
Speaking at a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed that China had issued “solemn démarches” to Singapore. This diplomatic reprimand followed Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) statement on January 14, which congratulated Dr. William Lai and his party on their electoral victory.
Ms. Mao stated on January 15, “Singaporean leaders have repeatedly emphasized that the Taiwan question is a ‘deep red line’ for China. We hope Singapore will adhere strictly to the One China principle and take concrete actions to maintain the friendly relations between China and Singapore.”
Philippines Faces Stronger Criticism
The Philippines received the harshest criticism, with China summoning its ambassador following a congratulatory message from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., posted on X (formerly Twitter), on behalf of the Filipino people.
China’s spokesperson warned, “This gravely violates the One China principle. We strongly urge the Philippines not to play with fire on the Taiwan issue.”
Broader Diplomatic Backlash
The United States also faced backlash despite President Joe Biden reiterating that the US does not support Taiwan’s independence. The State Department’s statement, which praised Taiwan’s “robust democratic system,” was deemed by Beijing as a serious breach of prior US commitments to maintain only non-official ties with Taiwan.
Japan, too, drew criticism after Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa described Taiwan as “an extremely crucial partner and an important friend.” Beijing’s embassy in Tokyo labeled these remarks as “a serious interference in China’s internal affairs.”
The United Kingdom received similar reproach after Foreign Secretary David Cameron referred to the election results as a “testament to Taiwan’s vibrant democracy.” China urged the UK to refrain from actions it described as meddling in its internal affairs.
Diplomatic Reactions and Implications
China’s sharp responses underline its sensitivity regarding Taiwan and its determination to uphold its One China policy. These tensions come amid growing international recognition of Taiwan’s democratic processes and strategic significance, further complicating Beijing’s foreign relations.
