The Australian eatery, known for its intentional poor service, may clash with Singaporean sensibilities.
With a reputation for delivering service that includes a middle finger gesture, slamming orders on tables, and curt responses, Karen’s Diner is set to debut its first pop-up in Singapore. This Australian restaurant chain, themed around the infamous “Karen” stereotype, is known for crafting an intentionally unpleasant dining experience, with staff trained to insult patrons while they enjoy their meals.
The diner’s motto, “Great Burgers and Very Bad Service. Prepare to live out your Karen Dreams,” serves as a nod to those unfamiliar with the term “Karen,” often used to describe entitled and unreasonable behavior in women. Karen’s Diner has selected Singapore as its inaugural location in Asia, embracing the notion that the customer isn’t always right.
Although an official opening date has yet to be announced, eager diners can sign up for a waitlist on Explore Hidden’s website. The pop-up is expected to operate during the “winter” season and will remain open until May 31, 2023, although its exact location remains undisclosed.
However, some netizens have voiced concerns that the diner’s concept may not resonate well with Singaporeans. “I’m uncertain about this. We live in sensitive times where people are easily offended. It might not go over well,” commented Facebook user Ace Low. Another user expressed skepticism about the diner’s success, noting that many locals might not appreciate the rudeness.
“This is a bit too advanced for Singaporeans; most will likely end up arguing with the staff. Maybe we need another 50 years?” remarked Facebook user Max Ho. Similarly, user Izam CarNage added, “Don’t open in SG; our people are too sensitive. They can’t take a joke. ‘Later sikit-sikit nak gaduh’,” translating to “They will want to argue bit by bit.”
Conversely, some users made light of the situation, claiming they already encounter “Karen” service in their daily lives. “No need for this; I go to the hawker center, and I already get Karen service there. What do I want? To go here? Aiyoooo, why so complicated! No small change, bye bye!” quipped one netizen.
“Sure, if you’re not keen on burgers, there are plenty of hawker stalls across the island that offer a similar kind of service,” added Facebook user Teck Loong. Before visiting Karen’s Diner, patrons should review the house rules to avoid being banned from returning.
