Social media users weigh in on the cost of drinks in Singapore, sparking debate on affordability and alternatives.
SINGAPORE: A social media post showcasing a $1.40 Teh C Kosong at NTUC Punggol’s Kopitiam has sparked a wave of reactions from netizens, prompting a discussion on drink prices in Singapore.
On Thursday, April 13, an online user shared a simple yet striking post about the cost of a typical local drink in Singapore. Teh C Kosong, a drink made with tea and evaporated milk without sugar, was priced at $1.40 at the food and beverage outlet. The post included two images of the drink, which immediately caught the attention of many online.
Several netizens quickly chimed in with their thoughts on the pricing. “Nowadays, it’s cheaper to make your own coffee,” one commenter wrote. Others shared their experiences and opinions on how to save money. “If it’s expensive, don’t drink it,” one suggested, while another remarked, “Very expensive and diluted.” A third user questioned why hot drinks were sold at such high prices, considering the low cost of ingredients. “One box of 100 Lipton tea bags is not expensive to buy from the supermarket. Bring your own tea or coffee bags and buy hot water—overall, it’s still much cheaper.”
A few users also referenced Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and National Development, Sim Ann, and her recent post about budget meals, which had attracted significant attention. Some questioned whether the prices of meals and drinks at NTUC-linked establishments were realistic. “Sim Ann, NTUC belongs to Government-linked companies. Why don’t you control their prices at $0.70?” one online user asked.
