How Singapore’s first WWE Superstar overcame the odds to shine on wrestling’s biggest stage.
In 2012, a young and unassuming Sean Tan stepped into the Singapore Pro Wrestling (SPW) training facility in Tai Seng. A decade later, under the moniker Dante Chen, he would make history as Singapore’s first WWE Superstar, debuting on WWE’s NXT brand.
In 2024, Dante became the first Singaporean to wrestle on WWE SmackDown, achieving a milestone victory during WrestleMania Weekend. Despite the naysayers dismissing pro wrestling as “fake,” Dante’s journey from Woodlands to WrestleMania reflects grit, dedication, and the ability to turn dreams into reality.
Humble Beginnings in Singapore
Born and raised in Woodlands, Sean Tan discovered wrestling through video games like WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain. Inspired by the larger-than-life characters, Sean realized at 14 that he, too, could step into the ring.
“Watching SPW training sessions ignited a spark in me,” Dante recalls. Though his parents initially hesitated to sign the waiver allowing him to train, they eventually relented, paving the way for Sean’s transformation.
Under the SPW banner, Sean adopted the name Trexxus, performing in front of modest crowds before larger SPW events began drawing hundreds. His late father, Patrick, was a constant supporter, cheering ringside and encouraging performers backstage.
The Leap to WWE
In 2019, Sean was invited to WWE tryouts in Shanghai. His impressive performance secured him a spot at the WWE Performance Center in Florida, where he officially became Dante Chen.
Recalling his early days, Dante says, “It was like my first day at SPW all over again—watching and waiting to step into the ring. The excitement was surreal.”
Despite being surrounded by seasoned talent, Dante stood out through his work ethic, learning from legends like Shawn Michaels. “It took a lot for me to muster the courage to introduce myself to Shawn,” he admits, now calling the Hall of Famer his mentor.
Dante’s signature moves, such as the Pump Kick and double palm strike, have earned him accolades on NXT. Behind these performances are countless hours of training, ensuring safety and entertainment for audiences worldwide.
WrestleMania Weekend and Beyond
In April 2024, Dante achieved a career-defining moment, competing during WrestleMania Weekend and celebrating his journey alongside friends and fans.
“Watching my peers perform on such a massive stage inspires me,” Dante shares. “It gives me hope that I’ll have my moment at WrestleMania one day.”
Staying Connected to Singapore
Despite his international success, Dante remains grounded in his roots. When he visits Singapore, he spends time with family, reconnects with SPW, and shares his experiences with aspiring wrestlers.
“I miss the food, but what I miss most are the people—my family and friends,” he says.
Carl Hella, SPW’s general manager, describes Dante as “disciplined, creative, and a natural leader,” qualities that have propelled him to the global stage.
Inspiring a New Generation
Dante hopes his journey inspires Southeast Asians to pursue their dreams, whether in wrestling or other fields.
“I’m unapologetically myself, and that authenticity resonates with the WWE Universe,” Dante reflects.
As he looks ahead, Dante is focused on new milestones—championship titles, Premium Live Events, and eventually a place in the WWE Hall of Fame.
Through determination and a passion for wrestling, Dante Chen has redefined what it means to be a Singaporean on the global stage, proving that no dream is too big to chase.
