The People’s Alliance, formed by four opposition parties, aims to unite for the upcoming 2025 General Election.
SINGAPORE: Four opposition parties in Singapore have come together to form an alliance, named the People’s Alliance, to contest in the next General Election, lawyer and politician Lim Tean announced on Thursday (June 1). The alliance includes the Peoples Voice, Reform Party, People’s Power Party, and Democratic Progressive Party.
The next General Election must be held by 2025, and Mr. Lim, leader of Peoples Voice, confirmed that discussions about forming the alliance have been ongoing since January. “Past attempts to forge an alliance of opposition parties, such as the talks in 2018 with seven parties, unfortunately went nowhere,” Mr. Lim said in a Facebook post.
“We have heeded the calls of Singaporeans and decided that the time for talking about opposition unity without the formation of an alliance is long past,” he added.
The first central executive committee members of the People’s Alliance include:
Chairman: Kenneth Jeyaretnam
Vice-Chairman: Peter Soh
Secretary-General: Lim Tean
Assistant Secretary-General: Yasmine Valentina
Treasurer: Mohamad Hamim Aliyas
Assistant Treasurer: Michael Fang
Organising Secretary: Goh Meng Seng
Assistant Organising Secretary: Juliana Juwahir
Members: Abdul Malik Rahmat, Lim Lian Chin, Chiu Shin Kong, Mahaboob Batcha Abdul Rasheed
Mr. Lim emphasized that the alliance plans to contest all the seats contested by the respective parties in the 2020 General Election, as well as additional seats. “The four parties are united on the most critical issues affecting the prosperity of our people and country in the coming decades,” he said.
The alliance already has a manifesto prepared for the upcoming General Election and is in the process of registering with the Registry of Societies. Once registration is approved, a press conference and official launch will be held.
