Fresh Graduate Faces Dilemma: Stay in Dream Job or Leave Due to Toxic Colleague?

Workplace negativity puts career aspirations and mental well-being at odds

A fresh graduate is grappling with a tough career decision after securing a four-month contract in their dream job, only to face persistent negativity from a senior colleague. Despite being offered a permanent role, they are unsure whether to accept it, fearing the impact on their mental health.

Sharing their story on Reddit’s r/malaysia forum, the graduate described how a senior coworker regularly belittled them, calling them slow and unfit for the job. The colleague even hinted that their contract could be terminated if negative feedback were given to management.

However, just days later, the graduate was unexpectedly offered a full-time position by HR. The offer provides stability, allowing them to live near their family without financial strain. Yet, the ongoing toxic behaviour in the workplace makes them hesitant about staying.

Reddit users weighed in with advice. Some suggested ignoring the senior colleague if they weren’t a direct supervisor, while others recommended reporting the issue to HR. A few users encouraged standing up to the colleague, emphasising that facing challenges head-on would be beneficial for future career growth.

Others pointed out that since the company still extended the permanent offer, it likely recognised the graduate’s capabilities, indicating that the toxic senior’s opinion might not hold much weight.

This online discussion highlights a common workplace struggle—whether to endure a difficult environment for career progression or prioritise mental well-being by walking away.
