A unique twist on online self-expression.
Attention, skeptics: there’s a fresh trend on the horizon. Contrary to expectations, Telegram is no longer just about public channels for deals, tips, and news—it’s evolving. The app was originally designed for organizations and public figures to broadcast messages to vast audiences. However, Gen Z has once again repurposed a platform to suit their needs, similar to how they’ve transformed Bondee rooms into makeshift venues for gatherings.
Now, many young people are using Telegram channels as personal diaries or newsletters, myself included. Unlike traditional public channels, these spaces are private and often limited to a select few subscribers. Typically set up for specific reasons—like my own channel dedicated to sharing my experiences as an exchange student in Hong Kong—these channels are filled with daily updates, from food photos to rants about service experiences.
With features like reactions and comment sections, my dedicated audience of 19 can easily interact with my musings, making it feel like a group chat where everyone can chime in at once.
Seeking Connection
I first encountered these blog-style Telegram channels in early 2020 within the K-Pop fan community. Users would share links to their channels in group chats, and I initially found it perplexing. It struck me as somewhat self-indulgent and attention-seeking, as if everyone was vying for their moment in the spotlight.
“It’s the idea that everyone wants to be famous,” says Jake*, a 22-year-old university student and Telegram channel critic. “People crave attention, consciously or subconsciously. Feeling like a celebrity validates that people care about you.”
Yet, after giving it a try, I realized that my friends genuinely enjoyed following my updates. Several friends mentioned they wouldn’t create their own channels but appreciated subscribing to mine. I created mine initially because a friend wanted more frequent updates than I was sharing on Instagram. Ultimately, as social beings, we all appreciate a bit of validation and attention now and then.
Jake acknowledges that Telegram channels feel more authentic compared to other social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok, where people often chase popularity. “It’s a good middle ground because your audience consists of individuals who care.”
The Quest for Authenticity
The rise of BeReal underscores the demand for genuine interaction online. If you missed the buzz, BeReal prompts users to capture and share a photo during a two-minute window each day, avoiding filters and staged images. The app encourages users to share real moments rather than curated content.
After its viral success in late 2022, BeReal amassed over 73.5 million downloads globally, reflecting a desire for authenticity on social media. Telegram channels provide a similar experience, allowing Gen Zs to share unfiltered thoughts in real-time.
As a messaging platform, Telegram encourages a stream-of-consciousness style of expression. It’s more text-focused than Instagram or TikTok. Unlike Twitter, which has seen a decline, Telegram enables me to document my feelings—whether happiness, confusion, or frustration—in a straightforward manner.
I don’t need to post a random image just to accompany lengthy text or craft multiple tweets to convey a thought. Telegram is quick, immediate, and genuine.
Prioritizing Privacy
Having grown up in the digital age, Gen Zs are accustomed to being in the public eye. This may lead to a desire for a private space, distinct from their public personas. This isn’t a new concept; spam accounts on Instagram (often referred to as “Finstas”) exist for this very reason.
In contrast to “main” Instagram accounts, where users face societal pressure to maintain a certain image, Telegram allows individuals to share a more authentic version of themselves with a curated audience. There’s a sense of vulnerability and closeness with the smaller circles they allow into these spaces.
Unlike Instagram, where posts are accessible to everyone, Telegram channels send messages directly to friends’ devices. This creates a personalized experience that fosters deeper connections.
These channels often serve specific purposes. In my circle, friends typically use their channels to share updates from their overseas exchange programs, resulting in focused and tailored content. It’s similar to how some individuals create dedicated Instagram accounts for their artwork or photography.
The Future of Social Media
As someone immersed in social media, I don’t anticipate Telegram channels replacing other platforms entirely. They simply cater to Gen Z’s needs in a way that other platforms currently do not.
With the rise of apps like Locket, BeReal, and Bondee, striking a balance between the desire to share life updates and the need for intimacy and authenticity is crucial. But Gen Zs excel at navigating this landscape, continuously adapting and reinventing tools to fit their desires. For me, my Telegram channel serves all my needs amidst the constant emergence of new social media trends.
