Health Minister Ong Ye Kung Officiates Largest ActiveSG Gym at Bukit Canberra

New Sports Centre Features State-of-the-Art Facilities and Inclusive Programs for All Ages

SINGAPORE: Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, together with Sembawang GRC Member of Parliament Dr. Lim Wee Kiak, celebrated the opening of the largest ActiveSG gym in Singapore over the weekend of October 29. The 1,500-square-metre gym, located at Bukit Canberra, is part of the newly completed ActiveSG Sports Centre, which also includes two dance studios and four swimming pools that opened earlier in the month.

At the grand opening, Minister Ong and Dr. Lim participated in an Oxigeno® and Piloxing workout session with about 200 residents. They expressed their enthusiasm for the new ActiveSG programs and facilities, highlighting the gym’s inclusivity. The gym features innovative HUR machines, which use air pressure instead of traditional weights, enabling users with varying physical abilities to work out safely and efficiently.

In addition to the gym, the ActiveSG Sports Centre at Bukit Canberra offers two dance studios with a variety of accessible and affordable fitness programs, including Oxigeno®, Piloxing, Hatha Yoga, and Zumba. These programs will be available for booking starting in November. To further encourage active ageing, all Singaporeans aged 65 and above will continue to enjoy free access to the ActiveSG gym and swimming pools, including the new facilities at Bukit Canberra.

Health Minister Ong also shared a video on social media of himself working out with residents, encouraging more people to take part in the new facilities and get energized.

Dr. Lim, who has been a strong advocate for the project, noted that the idea for the integrated sports and community hub at Bukit Canberra was first discussed over 15 years ago. Initially delayed due to the pandemic, the long-awaited project aims to provide better access to recreational facilities for Sembawang residents and beyond.

The ActiveSG Sports Centre is part of the Sports Facilities Master Plan, which aims to provide more innovative, inclusive, and accessible sports facilities, with a goal of making them within a 10-minute walk from housing estates by 2030.
