While scientists monitor a new Covid-19 strain, Ho Ching emphasizes the importance of pneumococcal vaccinations for older adults to guard against bacterial infections.
SINGAPORE: As scientists closely observe a new Covid-19 variant, Ho Ching, wife of Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, has urged seniors to prioritize protection against bacterial infections by getting pneumococcal vaccines.
In a Facebook post, Ho Ching referenced a UK Daily Mail article discussing the emergence of a Covid-19 variant derived from the JN.1 strain. This strain is responsible for approximately 30% of new cases in the UK and 25% in the US. Although its severity and infectiousness remain under investigation, experts believe existing immunity from vaccinations and past infections offers adequate protection.
Ho Ching noted, “No evidence that they are any more serious in terms of disease severity than the Omicron from which the JN.1 has descended.” She humorously commented on the variant’s nickname, saying, “The JN.1 is nicknamed Juno, while the entire family of descendants of many generations are nicknamed FliRT! Hmmm!”
While Covid-19 remains a concern, Ho Ching emphasized that bacterial infections may pose a greater risk to seniors. “Rather than fret over Covid vaccines, better to get the 2 shots of pneumococcal vaccines,” she wrote, highlighting that pneumococcal bacteria can cause severe lung infections in older adults.
Pneumococcal Vaccines and National Health Efforts
Singapore’s National Adult Immunisation Schedule recommends pneumococcal vaccines for seniors. According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), vaccine uptake among residents aged 65 to 74 has risen significantly, from 10.3% in 2019 to 26.5% in 2022.
Ho Ching underscored the importance of this protection, noting that a single dose of the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is advised for adults over 65.
While Covid-19 remains a concern, Ho Ching’s message serves as a reminder for seniors to address other significant health risks, particularly bacterial infections, as part of a comprehensive approach to well-being.
