After 34 years of serving beloved porridge, owners may part ways with their culinary legacy.
SINGAPORE: Xian Ji Porridge, a cherished hawker stall in Tiong Bahru known for its silky smooth Cantonese-style porridge, may be closing its doors for good by the end of August. Established in 1989 by Mr and Mrs Soon, the stall operates for just two hours each day, serving devoted customers who have come to love its offerings.
However, recent developments have posed a challenge for the couple. Their neighboring business, Little Elephant Thai Bistro, has informed them of the need to reclaim the stall space for a kitchen expansion. Having sublet the area from the bistro, which had resigned its lease, the Sooks were given notice to vacate the premises to facilitate necessary renovations.
Mrs. Soon shared with 8Days that the end of August is likely to be their last operational day at this location. Despite the unfortunate turn of events, she hinted at the possibility of reopening at a new site, potentially closer to her home in Yew Tee. She emphasized that they maintained a good relationship with the Thai bistro owners, who had graciously allowed them to operate rent-free for the past three to four years.
The couple faces the tough decision of relocating amidst rising rental prices, especially considering they only operate half a day. If a new location is not secured, they are contemplating selling their cherished porridge recipe for approximately S$500,000, which would include training for potential buyers to continue the Xian Ji legacy.
In a heartfelt message on Facebook, the stall expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from customers, stating, “Big thanks to everyone for your support… it’s been overwhelming. It’s a sellout by 8 am!” They encouraged patrons to visit during their final days at their current location.
The stall, located at 57 Eng Hoon St, is open Tuesday to Friday from 7 am to 9:30 am.
