Laos Prime Minister Phankham to Make First Official Visit to Singapore

This is the Prime Minister’s inaugural official visit to Singapore since taking office in 2021.

SINGAPORE: Laos Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh will embark on his first official visit to Singapore from Tuesday (Sep 27) to Wednesday, at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He will be joined by his wife, Mrs. Sichanh Viphavanh, along with Cabinet ministers, senior officials, and a business delegation, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a news release on Monday.

“Singapore and Laos enjoy warm and friendly relations, with expanding cooperation in new areas such as energy and sustainability,” the MFA stated.

On Wednesday, Mr. Phankham will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Istana and will hold discussions with President Halimah Yacob and Mr. Lee. He will also partake in an official lunch hosted by Mr. Lee, during which the two leaders will witness the signing of several bilateral agreements. These agreements aim to establish a dialogue mechanism between the two foreign ministries and deepen collaboration in the energy, environment, and digital sectors, according to the MFA.

Additionally, during his visit, Mr. Phankham will be received by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam. As part of Singapore’s “orchid diplomacy,” a new hybrid orchid will also be named in honor of Mr. Phankham and his wife.
