“Lawrence Wong Promoted to PAP Deputy Secretary-General: A Step Towards Prime Minister?”

Netizens speculate on Wong’s political future following his new role within the People’s Action Party.

Netizens are buzzing with reactions to the recent promotion of Lawrence Wong, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, to the position of deputy secretary-general of the People’s Action Party (PAP). Many speculate that this move brings him closer to the role of Prime Minister in the future.

“Next up…Prime Minister,” quipped one user in a post on an online Singapore news forum on Monday (Nov 28), alongside a news article showcasing a photo of Wong and the caption, “Guess who got promoted? Me.”

The promotion has sparked predictions from various online users, with some commenting, “Basically the next Prime Minister now,” while another added, “Basically just make no big mistakes and the job is his in X number of months.”

However, not all reactions have been favorable. Some netizens have criticized Wong’s tenure as the former Minister for National Development, with one user stating, “Is this the guy who screwed up his job at MND by reducing the number of flats launched per year to 17k?” They even compared his performance to that of Khaw Boon Wan, a former National Development Minister, questioning, “Undoing the good that Khaw Boon Wan did? He is going to become Prime Minister to screw Singapore?”

Others drew comparisons between Wong and his fellow ministers, Chan Chun Sing (Minister for Education) and Ong Ye Kung (Minister for Health). One user remarked, “Lawrence Wong does not possess the commander-in-chief look and posture. Both Chan Chun Sing and Ong Ye Kung have them, but they just can’t see eye-to-eye. Funny – it’s only a job.”
