Max Maeder Returns to Hero’s Welcome at Changi Airport with Olympic Bronze

A triumphant homecoming for Singapore’s kitefoiling star.

SINGAPORE: Despite the early hours, a spirited crowd gathered at Changi Airport to welcome Singapore’s Olympic sailors—bronze medallist Max Maeder and Ryan Lo—home from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

An Overwhelming Reception
Maeder, who secured Singapore’s sixth Olympic medal, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support.
“I cannot express to you what it means to have a journey like this and be together with all the people here,” he said. “Seeing that my efforts made a positive impact on anyone’s day is very fulfilling. It’s so heartwarming.”

After a long flight, Maeder shared his excitement to reunite with his family and enjoy his grandmother’s cooking. “Anything on the table, I’ll probably devour,” he added with a smile.

Reflecting on his Olympic experience, Maeder noted the calm he felt heading into the final races, attributing it to his love for classical music. “The racing was the racing, and there’s lots to learn. I’m very excited to continue.”

He extended his thanks to fans who supported his journey: “I hope I can lighten up your day anytime you watch me.”

Ryan Lo’s Olympic Takeaway
Ryan Lo, who competed in the men’s dinghy race and placed 25th out of 43 participants, also received a warm welcome. Lo expressed joy at returning home after four months, looking forward to his mother’s cooking and Singapore’s signature bak chor mee.

Lo highlighted his pride in being a flag bearer at the opening ceremony, calling it a memory he will cherish for life.

Supporters at the Airport
Minister for Community, Culture and Youth Edwin Tong, along with numerous fans, turned up to celebrate the athletes’ return. Some supporters arrived as early as 6 am, including six-year-old Caleb, who made a sign declaring, “I skipped school to see Max Maeder.”

Caleb, who dreams of representing Singapore in basketball, said his favorite Olympic moment was Maeder’s bronze medal victory.

Maeder’s Journey to Bronze
Maeder’s journey at the Paris Olympics was nothing short of dramatic. After strong performances on the first two days of racing, he entered the finals with one match point, needing two race wins to secure gold. Despite challenging weather that canceled many races, Maeder clinched the bronze after finishing second and third in the final races.

A Decorated Career at 18
Since debuting at 14, Maeder has amassed numerous titles:

2021 Formula Kite Youth (Under-19) World Championships
2021 Formula Kite European Championships
2023 Formula Kite Youth (Under-19) World Championships
2024 Formula Kite European Championships
Prize Money and Legacy
For his bronze medal, Maeder will receive S$250,000 under Singapore’s Major Game Awards Programme, retaining S$200,000 after contributing 20% to the Singapore Sailing Federation for future development.

The awards, funded by the Tote Board Group, aim to reward and inspire athletes while supporting their respective sports associations.

Maeder’s success adds another chapter to Singapore’s Olympic story and serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the nation.
