Muslims in Singapore to Mark Start of Ramadan on Mar 12

The holy month of fasting begins as religious authorities confirm the date.

SINGAPORE: Muslims in Singapore will begin the holy month of Ramadan on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. The start of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon, in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar. Once the crescent moon is spotted, religious authorities officially declare the beginning of Ramadan.

In a statement, the Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, explained that according to astronomical calculations, the crescent for Ramadan will not be visible above Singapore’s horizon on Sunday evening. This is due to the crescent being “too small” and failing to meet the criteria of imkanur rukyah, an agreement on lunar observation standards among Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore (MABIMS) countries.

The Mufti confirmed that Monday marks the 30th and final day of the month of Syaaban, leading to the declaration that Tuesday, March 12, will be the first day of fasting for Ramadan.

Dr Nazirudin also extended his well-wishes to Muslims in Singapore, urging them to observe their fasts and acts of worship with dedication and excellence throughout the holy month.

“May God grant us the spiritual and physical strength to make the most of this blessed month,” he said.
