Nearly Half a Million Travelers Cross Woodlands, Tuas Checkpoints, Setting New Post-Pandemic Record

Surge in Traffic Breaks August 2019 Record as Over 490,000 Travelers Pass Through in One Day

SINGAPORE: On Friday, March 8, Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints saw an unprecedented surge in traveler numbers, with nearly 495,000 individuals passing through, breaking a pre-pandemic record set in August 2019 by approximately 10,000 visitors. This marked a significant milestone as travel volumes continued to rise post-pandemic.

According to data from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), a total of about 1.8 million travelers crossed both checkpoints between Thursday, March 7, and Sunday, March 10. The peak was observed on Friday, when the 495,000 figure was recorded.

The surge in traffic was mainly attributed to the influx of travelers from Malaysia, resulting in heavy departure traffic at both land checkpoints. In response, ICA implemented several measures to effectively manage the increased flow. Real-time traffic monitoring and adjustments to the Woodlands Checkpoint’s cargo area helped speed up vehicle customs clearance.

To alleviate congestion, ICA, in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority and cross-boundary bus service operators, increased bus frequency, ensuring smoother commutes and shorter wait times for passengers at the Woodlands Checkpoint. Regular updates on traffic conditions were posted on ICA’s Facebook page to keep travelers informed.

With the March school holidays on the horizon, the authorities are expecting even higher traffic volumes. Travelers are advised to monitor traffic updates and plan their journeys accordingly to minimize delays and ensure a smooth travel experience.
