As Singapore moves into the Year of the Tiger, there is optimism for a revival in family growth.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shared his hopes for a rise in marriage and birth rates during the Year of the Tiger. In his Chinese New Year message, PM Lee reflected on the dip in weddings and births caused by the pandemic but expressed optimism that these numbers would improve as life gradually returns to normal. He pointed out that many couples had delayed their weddings, but there is now a resurgence in marriage rates, nearly reaching pre-pandemic levels.
Although the birth rate has slightly dropped, PM Lee noted that it was not as severe as anticipated. He emphasized that families remain a cornerstone of society, bringing hope and joy. To support family growth, the government introduced the Baby Support Grant, offering financial aid to parents who had children between October 2020 and September 2022. This grant is part of ongoing efforts to encourage more families to grow, ensuring strong societal bonds.
In addition, PM Lee urged Singaporeans to continue following health and safety protocols during Chinese New Year celebrations. Vaccinations, he said, remain crucial for safeguarding families and ensuring the economy continues to recover smoothly. He acknowledged the continued importance of family in Chinese New Year festivities, reminding everyone of the need for social responsibility as gatherings remain limited.
PM Lee concluded with an inspiring call for unity: “In the new year, let us work together to resolutely overcome the pandemic with the strength of the Tiger, and seize new opportunities to build a better Singapore with the boldness of the beast,” he said.
