PM Lee Optimistic for 2022 as Singapore Gradually Reopens Borders

Singapore prepares for a cautious recovery as it resumes travel and navigates post-pandemic challenges.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed measured optimism about Singapore’s economic outlook for 2022, highlighting the nation’s progressive reopening of borders and the return of international travel. During his visit to Jurong Point, PM Lee acknowledged that while challenges remain, particularly with the Omicron variant still present, the nation is well-positioned to move forward cautiously.

He interacted with frontline workers, particularly taxi drivers and delivery riders, thanking them for their perseverance throughout the pandemic. PM Lee pointed out that many in these sectors have struggled due to reduced demand, as remote work decreased the need for transportation services. However, he also noted that many workers had adapted to these changes through various support schemes offered by the government.

Looking ahead, PM Lee spoke about the government’s efforts to facilitate economic recovery by gradually resuming travel and maintaining open borders for trade. He emphasized that, while Singapore has made progress, the global recovery will continue to face obstacles such as fluctuating pandemic conditions in other countries. PM Lee remained hopeful, encouraging Singaporeans to stay resilient and adaptable to the evolving situation.

He also underscored the need to continue improving workplace conditions, particularly for workers in the gig economy. With the evolving nature of work, PM Lee stressed the importance of addressing long-standing concerns, such as workplace injury coverage and insurance, to provide gig workers with better security and opportunities in the economy.
“The path forward, we hope, includes offering our drivers and delivery riders enhanced opportunities in the economy, particularly by improving areas such as workplace injury coverage and insurance, which can give them a stronger sense of financial security,” PM Lee concluded, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting workers as the economy progresses.
