Resident Leaves Punggol, Citing Unpleasant Odors, Dismal Carparks, and Noisy Neighbors

A former resident shares frustrations about life in Punggol that led to their move.

A former resident of Punggol has shared their grievances about living conditions in the area, highlighting issues such as an unbearable smell, uninviting carparks, and disruptive neighbors, which ultimately prompted their decision to relocate.

In a post to the Facebook group Complaint Singapore on October 7, the individual recounted their experiences in Punggol, stating, “Finally moved out from Punggol, which was eye-opening and an experience that not everyone in Singapore will ever experience.”

The resident pointed out several factors contributing to their dissatisfaction, contrasting them with their new home in a central area. They remarked, “The smell from Pasir Gudang is terrible every day. I feel suffocated in the morning and constantly need to clear my throat. Now in the central side, the air is so fresh; this problem is gone.”

They also criticized the carparks in Punggol, describing them as “depressing, dark, and dirty,” especially when compared to older estates. The resident expressed concerns over safety, stating that pedestrians often have to be wary of “reckless drivers going against traffic and speeding around corners.”

Regarding the lifts, the individual recounted experiences of waiting up to 10 minutes only to find them overcrowded with “inconsiderate people who don’t move inwards.”

Another source of frustration was the noise from their young couple neighbors, whose children were described as particularly disruptive. “The parents seem indifferent, likely dealing with their own struggles. Their expressions often reflect sadness that you’d want to avoid contracting,” they noted.

Traffic congestion added to their woes, with the resident mentioning “terrible drivers” not typically seen in the city center. “I can only pity them for managing high payments on full car loans and HDB loans,” they remarked.

The lack of “proper food centers” and the presence of more expensive dining options compared to other areas were also criticized. The resident concluded by mentioning the constant disturbance from airplanes overhead, noting, “Aeroplanes flying up and down every day and jet sounds pouring all over your neighborhood.”

Other former residents of Punggol responded to the post, echoing similar concerns, including excessive sunlight in some areas and poor airflow in HDB flats.
