During a Recent Outreach, Foo Highlights the Importance of a Credible Opposition in Parliament and Engages with Community Concerns.
Workers’ Party politician Kenneth Foo engaged with residents at Blk 85 Food Market on Bedok North Rd over the weekend, emphasizing in an April 3 Facebook post that “they understand the importance of having a credible opposition in Parliament.”
During his visit, one resident expressed that the nation should avoid a dominant single-party system. Mr. Foo highlighted a conversation with a man he referred to as “Uncle Tan” (not his real name), who, like Mr. Foo’s father, was once a private hire driver.
April 11, 1971, stands out in “Uncle Tan’s” memory as the day he had to relinquish his job as a private hire driver, known then as (霸王车夫), due to a government crackdown on the trade. He later managed to obtain a taxi license, which he held until his retirement in his 60s. In contrast, Mr. Foo’s father eventually found work as a sailor.
“How times have changed, with a trade that was once illegal now providing a livelihood for many,” remarked the WP politician.
As he spoke with several residents, Mr. Foo felt grateful for their understanding of the opposition’s role in promoting “a more balanced system.” He noted that one resident remarked that there should not be a situation of 一党专政 (dominant single party) to ensure that the voices of the people are taken seriously.
Mr. Foo expressed his appreciation for Singaporeans’ comprehension of the Workers’ Party’s goals for the country, stating, “Yes, there will be many challenges ahead, but we will face them as they come.”
He concluded his post by mentioning that fellow WP member Abdul Shariff Aboo Kassim continued the party’s outreach efforts that day in landed property areas.
For the past few years, Mr. Foo has been active in East Coast GRC alongside Nicole Seah, who serves on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) as the president of its youth wing. Ms. Seah, 35, is currently on maternity leave.
Together with Mr. Foo, Mr. Abdul Shariff, Mr. Terence Tan, and Mr. Dylan Ng contested the East Coast GRC in the 2020 General Election, achieving a commendable 46.61 percent of the votes against the ruling People’s Action Party’s 53.39 percent.
