Achieving Global Certification for Commitment to Eco-Friendly Practices
SINGAPORE: Sentosa has made history as the first island destination in Asia to receive global recognition for its commitment to sustainability.
In a press release on Tuesday (August 16), the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) announced that it has been awarded the Global Sustainable Tourism Council – For Destinations certificate.
Sentosa joins an elite group of 23 other certified sustainable destinations, including Vail in Colorado and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. Resorts World Sentosa had previously achieved certification for destination and industry criteria in 2021.
The awarding of this certificate underscores SDC’s “strong push for collective and collaborative efforts across the entire island to create a more sustainable Sentosa,” as stated in the announcement.
SDC views this certification as a significant milestone for both the organization and the Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network, a public-private partnership aimed at reaching sustainability objectives, including carbon neutrality by 2030.
In 2021, SDC revealed that the network “will develop sustainability solutions for Sentosa as a whole, through resource sharing and expertise, while leveraging economies of scale to implement large-scale solutions.”
Mr. Randy Durband, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, highlighted that Sentosa has successfully passed rigorous audits to validate its status as a sustainable destination.
Ms. Thien Kwee Eng, CEO of SDC, expressed commitment to working closely with both public and private sectors to cater to the growing demand from travelers for sustainable options.
With its new certification, Sentosa aims to continue supporting the Singapore Green Plan 2030, contributing to the creation of a sustainable environment for future generations of Singaporeans and global visitors.
