Singapore Affirms Strong Ties with China Amid Congratulatory Note to Taiwan’s Lai

MFA reiterates commitment to the ‘One China’ policy despite Beijing’s diplomatic response.

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s robust and enduring relationship with China remains unaffected, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, following diplomatic concerns raised by Beijing over Singapore’s congratulations to Taiwan’s William Lai Ching-te.

Addressing Parliament on Monday (Feb 5), Dr. Balakrishnan responded to MP Dennis Tan’s (WP-Hougang) query about Singapore-China relations. He stated:

“Singapore was approached by the Chinese, and we reiterated our longstanding approach and ‘One China’ policy. Our strong and deep relations with China have not been affected, and our engagements with China have proceeded apace.”

Diplomatic Context
On Jan 14, Singapore congratulated Dr. Lai after he secured the presidency for Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party. In its statement, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) emphasized its close and longstanding ties with Taiwan, grounded in the ‘One China’ policy, while advocating for peaceful cross-strait relations.

Dr. Lai, a prominent supporter of Taiwan’s independence, has drawn criticism from rivals who claim his leadership could destabilize Taiwan and strain cross-strait peace.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office reacted strongly, with Xinhua reporting that the election results “will not impede the inevitable trend of China’s reunification.”

China’s Response
China expressed disapproval of international congratulations extended to Dr. Lai, including those from Singapore, the United States, Japan, and various European nations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed that Beijing had issued “solemn demarches” to Singapore, emphasizing the significance of the Taiwan issue as a “deep red line” for China.

“China values Singapore’s acknowledgment of this stance and hopes Singapore will uphold the overall friendly relations between China and Singapore with concrete actions,” she remarked during a Jan 15 press briefing.

Singapore’s Stance
Despite the diplomatic exchange, Singapore’s government reaffirmed its commitment to the ‘One China’ principle, maintaining its position of fostering strong ties with both China and Taiwan while supporting peaceful developments in cross-strait relations.
