Despite high rankings, some Singaporeans still favor Taipei and Tokyo’s transport systems
SINGAPORE: Singapore’s public transport system has earned the city-state a fourth-place ranking among 60 cities worldwide, according to the 2022 Urban Mobility Readiness Index by the Oliver Wyman Forum and the University of California, Berkeley. This places Singapore just behind Hong Kong SAR, Zurich, and Stockholm.
The index evaluates cities based on connectivity, electrification, automation, and the efficiency of public transit systems. In the Public Transit sub-index, Singapore also ranked fourth, receiving a score above the global average of 51.7 percent, with the leaders in this category exceeding 70 percent.
Local reactions to the ranking sparked discussion on platforms like Reddit, where some Singaporeans questioned the absence of Taiwan and Tokyo in the top rankings, noting a personal preference for those systems. Others defended Singapore’s public transit for its efficiency, affordability, and accessibility.
Singapore’s public transport system is noted for its affordability, with benefits such as no fares for children and a 15 percent discount for low-wage workers. Last year, a McKinsey report praised Singapore’s system for its environmental sustainability and safety, calling it “best-in-class” in terms of accessibility and efficiency.
