First Asian city to welcome the global basketball event, featuring teams from five continents and iconic player inductions.
SINGAPORE — Basketball history will be made this September as Singapore becomes the first Asian city to host the prestigious FIBA Intercontinental Cup. The tournament, scheduled from September 12 to 15 at the Sports Hub, will feature six teams from five continents, marking a groundbreaking moment for the sport.
Adding to the excitement, the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024 ceremony will take place on September 14, honoring basketball legends such as USA’s Reggie Miller and Serbia’s Predrag Stojakovic for their exceptional contributions to the game.
“This year, we are excited to host the Hall of Fame for the very first time and welcome some of basketball’s biggest legends to our shores,” said Roy Teo, Chief of Industry Development, Technology & Innovation at Sport Singapore.
A Truly Global Tournament
The 34th edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup will feature a new milestone: the inclusion of Oceania’s Tasmania JackJumpers, the 2024 National Basketball League champions. Tasmania joins five other teams in the tournament:
Group A: Al Riyadi (Lebanon), Unicaja Malaga (Spain), Petro de Luanda (Angola)
Group B: Tasmania JackJumpers (Australia), Quimsa (Argentina), NBA G League United (USA)
Teams will compete in a single round-robin format, with group winners advancing to the finals on September 15. The group runners-up will vie for third place, and the remaining teams will face off for fifth-sixth positions.
Path to the Intercontinental Cup
Al Riyadi earned their spot by winning the inaugural Basketball Champions League Asia, defeating Shabab Al Ahli (UAE) 122-96. Meanwhile, Unicaja clinched their first Basketball Champions League Europe title with an 80-75 victory against Lenovo Tenerife. Petro de Luanda and Quimsa secured their places by triumphing in their respective continental championships.
FIBA Hall of Fame Ceremony
The tournament will also celebrate basketball’s rich legacy with the induction of iconic players into the FIBA Hall of Fame. This event underscores Singapore’s role in elevating basketball on the global stage.
“The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is a unique global experience, and Singapore’s hosting of this event marks a remarkable milestone in basketball history,” said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.
