The Earthshot Prize, established in 2020, supports groundbreaking projects to combat climate change and safeguard the environment.
SINGAPORE: The third annual Earthshot Prize ceremony, created by Prince William, will take place in Singapore on November 7. The prestigious global environmental award, which was launched in 2020, seeks to recognize and support innovative initiatives aimed at combating climate change and protecting the planet.
This year, five winners will each receive £1 million (S$1.67 million) to further scale their environmental solutions. The finalists will be revealed later this year.
Prince William, announcing the venue for the 2023 ceremony on May 15, shared: “The Earthshot Prize is about demonstrating that solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges are already within reach. After two years of uncovering impactful ideas, I am thrilled that the 2023 finalists’ pioneering solutions will be celebrated here in Singapore.”
The event will feature performances by globally renowned musicians and artists, according to event organizers. For the first time, the Earthshot ceremony will be part of a broader series of events during Earthshot Week.
Global leaders, businesses, and investors will converge in Singapore to engage with the award finalists and explore collaboration opportunities. Organizers emphasized that Southeast Asia, a region heavily impacted by climate change, is also a hub for innovators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders working toward environmental restoration.
The inaugural Earthshot Prize was held in London in 2021, followed by the 2022 ceremony in Boston. The Prince and Princess of Wales attended both events.
This year’s event is supported by several key partners, including Temasek Trust, Temasek, the investment platform company GenZero, and Conservation International. These organizations will contribute their expertise and resources to ensure the success of Earthshot Week and the awards ceremony in Singapore.
Desmond Kuek, CEO of Temasek Trust, expressed hope that the partnership would “drive action and create lasting positive change for generations to come.”
Dr. Steve Howard, Vice Chairman of Sustainability at Temasek, noted that climate action requires ongoing collaboration from all sectors. “This is a crucial opportunity for the Temasek ecosystem to play a catalytic role in inspiring innovation and driving action across the region,” he added.
Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 “Moonshot” speech, which set the goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade, the Earthshot Prize aims to tackle some of the most significant challenges facing our planet.
Last year’s winners included a team from Oman that developed a method to convert carbon dioxide into rock, and a company working to provide cleaner-burning stoves to women in Kenya.
