Singapore’s Smart Nation and Digital Agency Merge for Unified Digital Transformation

The merger aims to streamline Singapore’s digital agenda under an expanded Smart Nation group.

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Smart Nation and Digital Government Group (SNDGG) will merge with the Ministry of Communications and Information’s (MCI) digital development functions, forming a consolidated entity to advance the country’s digital transformation agenda.

In a joint statement on Tuesday (Sep 12), SNDGG and MCI explained that this merger would enhance the government’s ability to pursue a comprehensive digital strategy, combining Smart Nation initiatives with broader digital development efforts.

What Will Change?
The expanded Smart Nation group will bring together SNDGG—comprising the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office and its implementing arm, GovTech—with MCI’s expertise in digital economy development, infrastructure regulation, online governance, and cybersecurity.

The newly integrated group will operate under the Prime Minister’s Office but be administered by MCI, with the merger being rolled out in phases starting Oct 23.

Despite the merger, the structures of statutory boards and agencies under both SNDGG and MCI will remain unchanged. Leadership positions will also stay the same, with:

Josephine Teo continuing as Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Smart Nation and Cybersecurity.
Dr. Janil Puthucheary remaining as Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of GovTech.
Tan Kiat How staying as Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information.
A Unified Digital Push
SNDGG has been instrumental in overseeing Singapore’s Smart Nation strategy, focusing on digital government services and technological capabilities. Similarly, MCI has spearheaded the development of the digital economy, digital inclusion, and cybersecurity.

The merger will create a more cohesive approach to Singapore’s digital initiatives, enhancing collaboration between government agencies while ensuring that citizens and businesses benefit from seamless digital services.
