Singapore’s Top Para Shuttler Tay Wei Ming Seeks Public Support to Achieve Paralympic Dream

Donations Needed to Overcome Financial Challenges Ahead of 2024 Paris Paralympic Games

Tay Wei Ming, the number one national para shuttler representing Team Singapore, is determined to fulfill his lifelong dream of competing in the Paralympic Games, but he needs public assistance to turn this aspiration into reality.

The 34-year-old athlete has reached out to The Independent Singapore, appealing for financial support as he navigates the difficulties of being an independent competitor. “I have been competing for the nation since 2008, and my proudest achievement is being crowned the 2017 Doubles World Champion,” he shared.

However, Tay has always envisioned qualifying for the Paralympics, a dream that has become increasingly challenging since the onset of the pandemic. “Just like the various hurdles we encounter in life, reaching that goal has become tougher,” he remarked. “I am still fighting to keep that dream alive,” referring to the upcoming 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

Despite being born with Erb’s Palsy, a condition that results in muscle weakness in the arm or shoulder, Tay continues to demonstrate remarkable perseverance and competitive spirit.

To maximize his chances of securing a spot in the Paralympics, he recognizes the need to improve and maintain his world ranking over the next two years. “This can only be achieved by participating in as many international competitions as possible to accumulate sufficient ranking points,” he explained.

In partnership with the Singapore Disability Sports Council, Tay has launched a crowdfunding campaign aimed at helping him travel to these international events. Their goal is to raise S$64,000, with approximately S$9,100 already contributed.

According to the campaign details, donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar under the One Team Singapore Fund (OTSF). Members of the public who wish to support Tay can contribute [here].
