Speeding at 201km/h to Rush Drunk Wife Home Leads to Fine and Driving Ban

Man Faces Consequences for Dangerous Driving in Singapore

SINGAPORE: A man was fined S$1,000 and banned from driving for nine months after speeding at 201km/h on the East Coast Parkway. Allan Ong, 34, pleaded guilty to exceeding the 90km/h speed limit during the incident, which occurred around 10:30 PM on September 3, 2020.

Just four days later, when questioned by police, Ong denied knowing the identity of the driver in the speeding vehicle. As part of the sentencing, two additional charges—providing false information to a public servant and not wearing a face mask—were taken into account.

During the court proceedings, District Judge Salina Ishak inquired about the reason for Ong’s excessive speed. Ong explained that he was rushing his wife home because she was intoxicated and behaving inappropriately. The judge criticized him for putting both their lives at risk, to which Ong expressed his remorse.

Seeking leniency, Ong highlighted that he is the sole breadwinner for his family of four and mentioned that his driving license had already been suspended for 18 months.

In delivering the sentence, the judge pointed out that Ong was driving 111km/h over the speed limit and imposed the maximum fine. First-time offenders for speeding can face fines up to S$1,000 or imprisonment for up to three months, with maximum penalties being doubled for repeat offenders.
