The former presidential candidate accepts defeat, while some supporters express frustration at the media and election process.
The release of the sample count results on election night left Tan Kin Lian’s presidential bid all but decided. With a mere 14% vote share compared to Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s commanding 70%, the path to the Istana for Mr. Tan had effectively closed. While he congratulated Mr. Tharman and awaited the final results before formally conceding, some of his supporters struggled to accept the outcome.
A Predictable End
At his residence in Yio Chu Kang, Mr. Tan graciously addressed the media, stating, “I wish to send my sincere congratulations to Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam for his success in this contest.” Despite his confidence in Mr. Tharman’s overwhelming lead, he chose to delay an official concession until the final tally was announced.
The night marked a bittersweet conclusion for Mr. Tan, who improved his vote share slightly compared to his 2011 bid but still finished last among the three candidates. His wife, Madam Tay Siew Hong, stood by his side, smiling proudly.
Supporters’ Unfiltered Reactions
Not all supporters matched Mr. Tan’s composure. Iris Koh, founder of the anti-vaccine group Healing the Divide and a vocal supporter, launched a tirade against the media during the evening. While helping herself to the buffet, she accused mainstream outlets of bias, alleging they were responsible for Mr. Tan’s loss.
“Mainstream media is 100% corrupt,” she declared, drawing restrained laughter from journalists.
Another supporter, Jennifer Tan, echoed these sentiments, accusing the media of unfair coverage and taxpayer waste. Her rhetoric mirrored that of populist movements abroad, further fueling the tension.
Dignified Voices Amidst the Noise
Not all interactions were fraught. Freddy Neo, a former colleague of Mr. Tan, offered a measured response, congratulating Mr. Tharman and praising Mr. Tan for his leadership during their time at NTUC Income. “I’m here to support my ex-boss and my friend,” Mr. Neo said, providing a moment of calm amidst the chaos.
The Value of Losing with Dignity
While Mr. Tan’s campaign ended in defeat, his concession and the peaceful conduct of the election underscored the strength of Singapore’s democratic process. However, the behavior of some supporters risked overshadowing his efforts, raising concerns about the potential erosion of trust in public institutions.
As the night drew to a close, Mr. Tan’s media team confirmed he would not make another appearance, choosing to rest instead. In the end, his candidacy offered Singaporeans a choice, and the election highlighted Tharman Shanmugaratnam as a unifying figure for the nation.
