Thundery Showers Expected Through March as Monsoon Season Persists

Afternoon rains forecast to continue across Singapore, with temperatures reaching up to 34°C on drier days

Singapore’s rainy season is expected to carry on through the end of March, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore’s latest forecast. The monsoon conditions that have brought consistent rain in February and early March are set to persist, bringing “short-duration moderate to heavy thundery showers” on most afternoons, which could extend into the evening.

These thundery showers are largely a result of strong daytime heating and the localized convergence of winds. The Met Service projects near-average rainfall for the second half of March, though total rainfall is likely to exceed average levels in many parts of the island. Daily temperatures are expected to range between 24°C and 33°C, with highs reaching around 34°C on lighter, cloud-free days.

The beginning of March saw particularly wet conditions due to the northeast monsoon. Between March 3 and 4, a monsoon surge brought widespread heavy rain to Singapore. During this time, the island also experienced notably cool weather, with temperatures dipping below 28°C on three separate days. On March 1, Sengkang recorded the highest daily rainfall at 104.4mm, while East Coast Parkway and Newton saw some of the lowest maximum temperatures at 26.1°C and 21.1°C, respectively.

Rainfall was recorded as “well above average” for March’s first half, with Sengkang showing the highest anomaly at 211 percent above average.
