Pranav Madhaik, a Talented Badminton Player, Remembered for His Positive Attitude and Athletic Achievements

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Sports School announced on Wednesday, October 11, that it is investigating the tragic death of a Secondary 2 student who fell ill after participating in a fitness trial.

The 14-year-old, identified by his uncle as Pranav Madhaik, began feeling unwell after completing a 400-meter fitness time trial on October 5. At approximately 6:50 PM that evening, the Singapore Civil Defence Force was called to the school for assistance. Pranav was then rushed to the National University Hospital, where he sadly passed away on Wednesday.

The school responded by stating, “We will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, review our safety protocols, and provide updates to the family.” Due to the ongoing investigation, the school refrained from providing further details but requested the public’s understanding and privacy for the grieving family.

A Promising Young Athlete
The Singapore Sports School expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Pranav, extending condolences to his family. According to the school, Pranav was not only a talented athlete but also a model student with exemplary character.

“He was always cheerful, had a positive attitude towards both his studies and training, and was well-liked by his peers, coaches, and teachers,” the school said. Pranav excelled in badminton, winning several national age-group competitions and had a bright future ahead.

The school also assured that it would continue to support Pranav’s family during this difficult time, with counselors and staff offering assistance to students, athletes, and staff affected by the loss. The well-being of its students remains a top priority for the school.

Uncle’s Account of the Incident
Pranav’s uncle, Raj Verma, spoke to CNA, sharing that the family was notified of the incident while the ambulance was en route to the hospital. “By the time the doctor arrived, most of his organs had already failed,” said Mr. Verma. Pranav underwent a bypass surgery and another operation on his leg, but tragically, he passed away the following morning.

The family is now seeking answers from the school about the circumstances surrounding Pranav’s death.

Support from the Badminton Association
Alan Ow, CEO of the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA), confirmed the incident and expressed that the association is offering support to Pranav’s family. Pranav was part of the SBA’s national intermediate squad, a youth training program designed to nurture promising badminton players.

“The SBA is providing assistance to the family as they prepare for his funeral,” said Mr. Ow.
