A street interview reveals the diverse realities of wealth in Singapore, from financial struggles to a richer life philosophy.
SINGAPORE: A recent street interview by Asian Boss titled “Do Singaporeans Feel Rich?” uncovered the complex realities of wealth in Singapore. The responses highlighted how, contrary to popular belief, not all Singaporeans are financially comfortable, with many grappling with everyday challenges like high living costs and financial instability.
One retired restaurant manager revealed, “Earning SGD 3,000 or SGD 2,000 is still not enough to survive here, especially with the rising cost of living. The only thing that hasn’t gone up is the pay.” He noted how social media often distorts the reality of life in Singapore, urging people to be cautious about the images they see online. “We have our share of rich and poor people here, just like anywhere else,” he added.
A medical dosimetrist expressed concerns about medical expenses, saying, “It’s hard to survive. The cost of living, especially over the last two years, has been tough. I don’t even feel like I have enough to grow old comfortably here.”
Meanwhile, a foreign domestic worker from the Philippines shared her thoughts, saying, “Not every Singaporean is rich like people assume, but they are hardworking. That’s why they can afford their lifestyles.”
On a more philosophical note, some respondents shared their view that being rich is about more than just money. A young man said, “I have a lifestyle that makes me happy. I think being rich is not about how much you earn but about finding meaning in life. Money is just a number.” Others echoed similar sentiments, mentioning that they feel rich because they are financially independent and have everything they need and want.
When asked about the traits of wealthy people in Singapore, respondents pointed to those who could afford a home, a car, luxury goods, and dining out at fine establishments. Many also considered individuals who could raise a family and employ domestic help to be wealthy. One young student mentioned that she could tell if someone was wealthy based on how they dressed.
